Rock wall building (Summer 2003)
My parents used to have a horrid patch of weeds in their yard (unfortunately not photo documented). I spent about 3 days with a pick-axe digging out huge roots to clear out the area and then we decided to build a flower garden with a rock wall in the newly cleared space.

HighRes_WF35A031930857213 I think this is after all the root pulling was finished. We took about 3 full truck loads of roots and weeds to the dump if I remember correctly, it seemed like more just kept popping out of the ground with every one that got pulled. HighRes_WF35A031930857212 That's a lot of stone HighRes_WF35A031930857208 Even more stone. I think I realized it might take a bit longer than I had planned. HighRes_WF35A031930857210 We even bought a new shovel for the job. HighRes_WF35A031930857207 HighRes_WF35A031930857201 My first step was to lay out most of the stone on the yard so it would be easy to find pieces that would match what I needed. This covered a large portion of the side yard. At one point someone drove by and stopped to survey the work. They asked if we were paving the side yard with stone! HighRes_WF35A031930857202 HighRes_WF35A031930857203 See... lot's of stone. HighRes_WF35A032126851022 Terrible photo documentation, because it looks like the wall just popped up in 3 minutes. Actually this was well into the evening, most of the wall has been built but the ends still need to be done and I think I built it up another few layers. HighRes_WF35A032126851023 The stepping stones form a walkway between the two beds, and we are waiting to fill in the area in between with pebbles. HighRes_WF35A032126851024 The front bed is bordered by landscaping logs. I devised what I thought was a clever scheme for anchoring them: we cut them so the ends would stagger, then stacked them and drilled holes through the corners and midpoints, and then drove rebar through the holes and into the ground. This means it is possible to take the border apart or extend it easily (versus glueing it) but it still stays together. HighRes_WF35A032126851017 After pebbles have been placed, dirt levelled, and mulch spread on top. HighRes_WF35A032126851019 HighRes_WF35A031930857222 Whew, that was a lot of work. HighRes_WF35A032126851014 I left for school after the wall was built but Dad did the planting in the next few weeks.
